The Crown Dancers, known in
Apache as the Gaan, are the Mountain Spirits who aid and
protect the Apache People. Long ago, the Gaan were sent
by the Giver of Life, to teach the Apache how to plant corn,
hunt and live their lives in harmony with nature. Each
Crown Dancer represents the four sacred aboriginal colors and
directions. One dancer is black, representing the East.
Another Crown Dancer is green, representing South. The
next dancer comes from the West, which is yellow and the last
dancer is white and comes from the direction of the Big
Dipper--North. The fifth dancer is the Clown who
protects the dancers. The twirling bull rope makes a
roaring hum and drives away the evil spirits.
